Spathoglottis Garden Orchids

Deep pink and yellow Spathoglottis Garden Orchid blossoms

Spathoglottis Garden Orchids are one of the easiest orchids to cultivate. They do well in the ground or in containers. They even grow wild in many locations around the islands. The blossoms of Spathoglottis Garden Orchids sit atop tall, leafless stalks. Their bright green, spear-shaped leaves arise out of thick stems at the base of the plant called “pseudobulbs.”

With many varieties to choose from, Spathoglottis Garden Orchids range in color from white (not very common) to yellow to pink and purple. And as perennials, they will blossom year round as long as temperatures remain between 50 through 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes them an ideal flower for Hawaiian gardens and landscapes.

Growing Tips*

  • Provide orchids with full sunlight to light shade.
  • Planting medium, whether an orchid mix, potting soil, or Hapu’u fern shreds, should include some organic material, remain moist, and drain well.
  • Water regularly to keep soil moist. Don’t let the soil dry out, but don’t over water. Keep roots from becoming water-logged.
  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer for best results.
  • Prune away old or damaged leaves and old flower stems.
  • Use Integrated Pest Management to identify pests and reduce damage.

If you’ve never grown orchids before and aren’t sure you’ll be able to, start with Spathoglottis Garden Orchids. They represent an easy way to add a profusion of color to your landscape or lanai.
