Down To Earth Oyster Shell

Down To Earth Oyster Shell

Down To Earth Oyster Shell is a high-quality, all-natural source of the important plant nutrient, calcium. It is present in the walls of every plant cell and can only be obtained from the soil. Without it, new plants grow into distorted shapes because their cell walls haven’t formed properly.

Down To Earth Oyster Shell adds the needed calcium to your soil in an organic form that also helps prevent Blossom Rot in tomatoes and Bitter Pit in apples (be sure to have your soil tested to determine its calcium levels).

No live oysters are used in the production of Down To Earth Oyster Shell. Instead, ancient deposits of Carpenter oyster shells are harvested and ground into small, medium, and large particles.

These uneven shapes ensure the slow release of calcium into the soil for optimal root system uptake. The granules also improve the structure and overall quality of the soil.

How to Use Down To Earth Oyster Shell*

Follow these growing tips to use Down To Earth Oyster Shell with confidence.

  • Vegetable Gardens and Flower Beds: New gardens – towards the beginning (spring) or at the end (fall) of the dry season, thoroughly mix 2 1/2 to 5 pounds per 100 square feet into the top 3″ of soil. New transplants – mix 1 to 2 tablespoons into the back fill soil of the transplant hole. Fill the hole with the amended soil and around the transplant. Water thoroughly.
  • Outdoor Container Gardens: New gardens – thoroughly mix 1 to 2 tablespoons per gallon into the soil or 1/2 to 1 pound per cubic yard. Established plants – Every other month during the growing season, lightly mix 1 to 2 tablespoons per gallon into the soil surface.
  • Lawns: At the beginning and end of the dry season (spring and fall), use 2 1/2 to 5 pounds per 100 square feet of soil. Aerated soil improves fertilizer effectiveness.
  • Trees: New trees – thoroughly mix 1 to 2 cups into the back fill soil of the transplant hole. Fill the hole and around the tree with the amended soil. Water well. Established trees – mix into the soil surface and spread 1 pound per 1″ of trunk diameter around the base of the tree and out toward the drip line (the area located under the outer circumference of the tree’s branches). Water thoroughly.
  • Row Crops: Initially use 500 to 2,000 pounds per acre, depending on specific crop requirements and soil needs. Maintain this schedule annually.
