The “Earth Star” bromeliad, Cryptanthus “Ruby,” gets its name from the star shape of its variegated, ruby-red leaves.
And because the leaves of this earth-bound bromeliad aren’t designed to hold water like its tree-bound, epiphyte cousins, Cryptanthus “Ruby” must get water from the soil via its root system. As a result, it makes an excellent house plant to grow in containers or terrariums, but also does well outdoors.
A native of tropical Brazil, Cryptanthus “Ruby” loves humid conditions, grows slowly, and reaches a height of 6″, with a leaf spread of 6″ to 12″ in diameter. The red leaf color will intensify the more light it receives and turn green in low light conditions. Therefore, you may have to experiment with lighting conditions to get the most vibrant colors.
When fully mature, Cryptanthus “Ruby” produces tiny, white blossoms where the leaves meet in the center.
Cryptanthus “Ruby” is an easy-to-care-for bromeliad that even novice gardeners will have great success with.
