Double Rose Pikake

Closeup of off white blossom and green leaves of the Double Rose Pikake

The Double Rose Pikake (Hawaiian pronunciation of “peacock”) is a sweet-smelling jasmine that gets its name from Princess Ka’iulani’s love of roses and peacocks. Both of these specimens were found in abundance at Ainahau, the estate in Waikiki where she grew up.

The creamy-white, double flowers resemble miniature roses and bloom in the spring and summer. They are often included in fresh-flower leis for their beauty and fragrance.

Fairly resistant to drought, the Double Rose Pikake is a hardy shrub with bright green leaves. The plant grows to a width of two to three feet and up to six feet tall. You can grow it equally well in your landscape, garden, or in containers.

Growing Tips*

  • Best grown in full sunlight to ensure vigorous flower production.
  • Requires a well-draining, sandy or loamy soil, with a pH level between 6 and 6.5.
  • Water thoroughly, allowing the soil to dry slightly before watering again.
  • For maximum flower production, use a balanced fertilizer.
  • Use Integrated Pest Management to identify pests and reduce damage.
  • Prune when the plant isn’t flowering.

The Double Rose Pikake loves temperatures between 70 and 90 degrees F. This makes it an ideal flowering shrub for your home’s interior or exterior.
