Dwarf Bearss Lime Tree

Closeup of two fat green limes and their foliage on a Dwarf Bearss Lime Tree

The Dwarf Bearss Lime Tree first appeared in the U.S. back in 1895, in the grove of its namesake, T. J. Bearss. The lemon-sized fruit is seedless, mildly acidic, and an excellent source of vitamin C. Its skin, when ripe, is yellow-green in color.

Also known as Tahitian and Persian Lime, this hardy tree can produce a harvest as early as the first year when well cared for. Constantly flowering, fragrant, white blossoms; thick branches; and dark-green, glossy foliage make this dwarf variety an excellent container tree for your lanai. Sit back and enjoy a variety of bees, birds, and butterflies the Dwarf Bearss Lime Tree will attract.

Growing Tips*

  • Make sure the tree has full exposure to the sun.
  • Water regularly to keep soil moist. Don’t let the soil dry out, but don’t over water.
  • Plant in a well-draining, composted soil, with a pH level between 6 and 7.
  • Fertilize at planting and every eight to 12 weeks with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer for the first year or two.
  • Use Integrated Pest Management to identify pests and reduce damage.
  • Harvest when mature, yellow-green fruit begin to drop to the ground.

Juice from the fruit of the Dward Bearss Lime Tree makes a flavorful addition to recipes that normally call for lemon juice.
