Iriartea Deltoidea

Young, potted Iriartea Deltoidea palm has three, large, green, concave-shaped leaves, emerging from a single, light green trunk

Iriartea Deltoidea is a canopy palm tree native to the Pacific coast rainforests of Central and South America, from Ecuador to Bolivia. It has several common names, including Pacific Copa Palm, Stilt Palm, and Barrigona Palm. Huacrapona is a local name from its place of origin.

While its growth rate is slow, Iriartea Deltoidea can reach heights of up to 98 feet. Four to 7 large, dark green, plumose leaves sit at the top of a thick, gray trunk that’s often swollen in the middle. And a dense thicket of black stilt roots grows out of its base. Residents in its native habitat use the wood of this abundantly available tree to fashion flooring for their households.

Iriartea Deltoidea Growing Tips*

Iriartea Deltoidea prefers partial to full shade when young but can tolerate more sun as it matures. With that in mind, follow these general palm-tree growing tips to ensure your Iriartea Deltoidea has a long and healthy life.

  • Situate the palm tree in low-traffic areas to avoid being brushed against too often. This weakens the leaves.
  • Repot when the palm becomes completely pot-bound. This will slow down its growth if you want your palm tree to remain indoors for as long as possible. Consider transplanting tall-growing palms outside to allow them to reach their full height. Allocate up to 50 feet of space out from the trunk for the root system to spread.
  • Plant in well-draining soil; soggy soil encourages fungus growth. For potted palm trees, an all-purpose potting soil, works well. Thoroughly loosen the soil where you intend to plant outdoor palm trees, removing weeds and rocks to ensure good drainage.
  • For potted plants, use a fertilizer designed especially for palm trees. Have your soil tested to determine what nutrients, if any, it needs to ensure the best growing environment for your outdoor Iriartea Deltoidea.
