Marojejya Darianii (Big Leaf Palm) is native to the swamps of the northeast section of Madagascar. The tall, green leaves of this rare, exotic palm can reach up to 20 feet in length. The leaves are stiff, with sharp edges. As a result, it is important to handle them carefully. The Big Leaf Palm produces blossoms in shades of yellow, white, cream, and tan.
Since Dr. Marty Darian discovered this palm tree in the Madagascar wilderness in 1983, it has become extremely popular. Unfortunately, Marojejya darianii (Big Leaf Palm) is on the wildlife endangered species list as a result of lost habitat from logging and farming.
Marojejya Darianii (Big Leaf Palm) prefers a partially- to fully-shaded location when young. And while mature plants can do well in full sunlight, their appearance improves considerably in partial shade throughout their life cycle. This swamp-bred palm thrives in a consistently moist environment. It is important therefore not to let the soil dry out between watering.
With that in mind, follow these general palm-tree growing tips to ensure your Big Leaf Palm has a long and healthy life.
