Phoenicophorium Borsigianum is native to the Seychelles, an island chain in the Indian Ocean. Also known by its common name, Latanier Palm, it works well either in the garden or yard, as well as in containers indoors or on your lanai.
Only recently introduced to cultivation, it is a solitary palm that grows up to 50 feet tall. When young, black spines encircle its stems but fall off as the tree matures. Its crinkly leaves have prominent veins and orange, serrated edges and can extend up to 7 feet from the trunk. And as the leaves fall off, they leave a ring of black scars around the trunk. After flowering occurs, Phoenicophorium Borsigianum produces small, orange, oval-shaped fruit.
Phoenicophorium Borsigianum is a hardy palm, capable of growing in full sunlight when mature. It can even survive periods of drought. However, young trees prefer shade and lots of moisture in a protected location away from the wind which can damage the leaves.
With that in mind, follow these general palm-tree growing tips to ensure your Phoenicophorium Borsigianum has a long and healthy life.
