Pinanga Coronata (Ivory Cane Palm)

Young, potted Pinanga Coronata palm, with a trio of tall, feather-like green leaves emerging from its base.

Pinanga Coronata (Ivory Cane Palm) is a striking, ornamental palm tree native to the island rainforests of southeast Asia. It is medium in size, grows in clusters or clumps, and can reach a height of 20 feet in the wild. In cultivation, it grows up to 12 feet tall. This makes it a great candidate as an understory tree when planted outdoors. And because it grows in clumps, it can also serve as privacy screening for your yard.

The trunk of this eye-popping, exotic palm is slim and ringed in green, but turns a cream color as it matures. It produces feather-shaped leaves and small pink flowers. These lovely blossoms give way to fruit that starts off as bright, red-colored berries, but darken to a deep purple when ripe.

Pinanga Coronata (Ivory Cane Palm) Growing Tips*

Pinanga Coronata (Ivory Cane Palm) is an easy palm tree to grow, adapting to many different soil types. It prefers partial sun to full shade and lots of humidity. With that in mind, follow these general palm-tree growing tips to ensure your Ivory Cane Palm has a long and healthy life.

  • Situate the palm tree in low-traffic areas to avoid being brushed against too often. This weakens the leaves.
  • Repot when the palm becomes completely pot-bound. This will slow down its growth if you want your palm tree to remain indoors for as long as possible. Consider transplanting tall-growing palms outside to allow them to reach their full height. Allocate up to 50 feet of space out from the trunk for the root system to spread.
  • Plant in well-draining soil; soggy soil encourages fungus growth. For potted palm trees, an all-purpose potting soil, works well. Thoroughly loosen the soil where you intend to plant outdoor palm trees, removing weeds and rocks to ensure good drainage.
  • For potted plants, use a fertilizer designed especially for palm trees. Have your soil tested to determine what nutrients, if any, it needs to ensure the best growing environment for your outdoor Pinanga Coronata (Ivory Cane Palm).
