The Protea evergreen is one of the oldest plants on earth, dating back over 300 million years. Hailing from South Africa and Australia, these flowering shrubs and trees produce a bountiful amount of nectar. It’s no wonder they’re also known as “sugar bushes.”
This hardy plant is able to survive in fairly harsh conditions. But they prefer sunny, hot climates, making them perfect for Hawaii. Our seedlings come in 4-inch pots, and there are many varieties to choose from.
Protea flowers exhibit a wide range of colors, including red, pink, orange, yellow, cream, and white. They are shaped like goblets and blossom in big clusters. Large bracts (colorful, stiff leaves) surround their downy centers and spiral around the plant’s stem. And the bracts assume a variety of shapes – pointed, oval, round, even paddle-shaped.
Because Proteas are toxic to humans and pets, just be careful where you place them in your home and landscape.
Even in less than hospitable landscapes, your Proteas will flourish when you keep these tips in mind.
